NEWPORT, Ore. -- A fugitive wanted in several states was caught over the weekend after he crashed into several cars on the Yaquina Bay Bridge, police said.

Lincoln County deputies located 21-year-old Joshua B. Cherry, of Newport, just after 2 p.m. Saturday, but said he refused to comply with their demands when they tried to take him into custody.

He fled in his vehicle, heading southbound over the Yaquina Bay Bridge. Newport police were called in to help with the pursuit.

Cherry drove recklessly into oncoming traffic and struck several other vehicles on the bridge, according to Newport Police Sgt. Ken Real.

"Cherry’s vehicle was disabled by the crash in the center of the bridge, where he continued to try to escape on foot before being apprehended by police," Real said.

Cherry was jailed on a long list of charges, including reckless driving, attempting to elude in a vehicle and on foot, and multiple fugitive warrants.
