SPOKANE--Staff at the Spokane County Auditor's Office were busy all Thursday morning filling the county's first marriage licenses for same-sex couples.
The auditor's office says the process went smoothly. Staff were all excited and enjoyed the chance to be a part of this historic day.
The first same-sex couple in Spokane County got their marriage license just after 8:30 in the morning. Staff were busy non-stop for the 90 minutes immediately after they opened their doors. They went through more than 20 couples in that time alone. Normally they process 5 to 15 licenses on a winter day.
There was some concern about getting through paperwork since documents had to become gender neutral, but staff say they didn't have any issues.
