COEUR d’ALENE--There are 15,000 teachers across the state of Idaho and only one is the 2013 Idaho Teacher of the Year.  This year the honor goes to Katie Pemberton.

Pemberton is a math teacher at Canfield Middle School in Coeur d’Alene.  A surprise assembly was held at the school Thursday to announce Pemberton’s award.

The 7th and 8th grade math teacher is receiving the award and a check for $1,000.  It’s all in recognition of her innovative teaching methods, her use of technology in the classroom and her ability to help struggling students.

The path to reach this accomplishment started at an early age.  When Ms. Pemberton was only seven she knew she wanted to teach, even making up tests for her little brother.

Ms. Pemberton will eventually travel to Washington D.C. where she will meet the president and compete for National Teacher of the Year.
