PORTLAND – Police found the head from a baby Jesus statue that was stolen Wednesday from The Grotto in Northeast Portland.
Someone staying at the Travel Lodge at 3828 NE 82nd Avenue found the head on Saturday in the dumpster behind the motel.
Police spoke with Father Jack Topper from The Grotto and confirmed that the head belonged to one of his statues.
Five statues at The Grotto were vandalized when someone entered the grounds of the Catholic shrine, near Northeast 87th Avenue and Beech Street, and stole the heads of three of the statues, said Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau.
Portland police said Friday evening one of the statue heads was found perched on a post on the West end of The Grotto property and returned. The head belonged to the Virgin Mary statue.
The head of a Joseph statue is still missing.
Crime Stoppers was offering a $1,000 reward for tips that lead to an arrest in the vandalism case.
