SPOKANE, Wash. -- A suspect critically injured a homeowner’s dog while burglarizing a Spokane home, according to police.

Officers responded to a reported stabbing in the 2900 block of E. Diamond around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The homeowner allegedly found 42-year-old Roger Mendenhall in his bedroom with a knife. He confronted Mendenhall, also known as Lucky, and a scuffle ensued. Mendenhall was stabbed in the leg during the encounter.
A neighbor tackled the suspect when he tried to escape. He and the homeowner pinned

Mendenhall in the front yard until police arrived.

The homeowner then found his pit bull Chance in a pool of blood in his living room. He took the dog to a local vet, where he was treated for a stab wound to an artery. He is currently in critical condition. The owner says he does not have the resources to pay for Chance’s treatment.

Mendenhall faces felony burglary and assault charges, as well as a first-degree charge of cruelty to animals. He spent the night in the hospital for his wound before being booked into jail Thursday morning.

Police said Mendenhall was possibly intoxicated. The investigation is ongoing.
