PORTLAND -- A blaze Wednesday morning at a Northeast Portland restaurant was started by a burglar and was being investigated as a hate crime, police said.

A Portland police officer called for fire crews after he saw smoke coming from Mack & Dub's Excellent Chicken and Waffles, at 3601 NE Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard, according to Lt. Damon Simmons.

The fire had burned through the roof of the building by the time firefighters arrived. The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported, Simmons said.

Investigators later determined the restaurant had been broken into and the fire was the result of arson.

"Additionally, the responding officer discovered graffiti that could be part of a hate crime," Simmons said.

No suspect information was available. Anyone with information was asked to call Portland police at (503) 823-3797.
