SPOKANE, Wash.-- The body of a Spokane soldier killed in action returned home Monday.
Friends and family were at Spokane International Airport to receive the remains of Sgt. Matthew H. Stiltz, 26. Authorities said he was killed in Afghanistan last week by indirect fire when insurgents attacked his unit.
Stiltz’s family is still numb from the loss and are now leaning on each other for healing and support. They say they are devastated by the heartache, but never before have been so proud of him.
Stiltz was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.
Family members said this was Stiltz’s third tour, and he was supposed to return home this summer. He completed two tours in Iraq.
A funeral for Stiltz is planned for Saturday, November 24 at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial. The public is invited to attend.
