PORTLAND -- A sewage spill closed a part of the Fanno Creek Trail Friday night.

About 7:15 p.m. the spill was reported at SW 79th Avenue and Garden Home Street. along the Fanno Creek Trail.  About five gallons of sewage per minute were being released and streaming along the trail.

"Approximately 15,000 gallons of sewage was released along the trail by the time the sewage stopped leaking at 12:30 a.m.," according to Debbie Caselton with the City of Portland Environmental Services.

Crews closed the trail from SW 78th to SW 82nd avenues until Saturday evening.

No sewage was released into Fanno Creek. The cause of the leak had not been determined, but Caselton said it might have been a pressure main malfunction.
