Washington voters will only have to vote on one measure regarding same-sex marriage, not two.
The Olympian reports a citizen initiative that defines marriage as being only between a man and a woman did not obtain enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. I-1192 needed more than 240,000 valid signatures by Friday. Its sponsor, Stephen Pidgeon, admits he is still about 140,000 short.
The other same-sex measure that will be on the ballot is Referendum 74, which will allow voters to decide whether the state should enact the same-sex marriage law passed by the Legislature this year. A yes vote means you want to allow same-sex marriage. A no vote means you don’t.
The group Washington United for Marriage announced Monday that Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer each contributed $100,000 to the campaign to pass R-74.
