MERIDIAN -- Firefighters say a Meridian homeowner narrowly avoided disaster when his barn burst into flames Tuesday evening, causing about $7,000 in damage to the barn and a nearby shed.
Fire crews from Nampa, Meridian, and Star responded to the fire around 9 p.m. They say the flames quickly spread to a nearby field, and threatened, but did not burn, a nearby home.
The fire sparked in the area of North McDermott Road and St. James Loop, on the Ada-Canyon County line. Crews say the location was relatively far from Nampa and Meridian, which meant their response time was increased.
Witnesses at the scene say the home's renter saw smoke, identified the fire, and called the fire department.
Firefighters say no one was injured, but eight chickens were unfortunately killed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
