KINSAHSA, Congo (AP) — A man who holds dual Norwegian and British citizenship was found guilty of murder in Congo and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Joshua French is accused of strangling his former friend and cellmate, Tjostolv Moland, who was found dead in his cell last August. French's lawyers called the charges "political" and maintain Moland committed suicide.

On Wednesday, Judge Serge Kabondo Pibwe threw out all of the arguments made by French's defense team. He said that the tribunal sentenced French to life in jail for "assassination."

French's Congolese lawyer, Marie-Andre Mwila, said he is not surprised by the ruling because of the political nature of the trial, but said he would advise French to appeal.

French and Moland were in jail after being found guilty in 2009 of having murdered their driver.
