UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.N. diplomats say Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has selected Sigrid Kaag of The Netherlands to lead the team charged with destroying Syria's chemical weapons.

The diplomats said Monday that Ban sent a letter to the Security Council Sunday informing him of his intention to appoint Kaag, the assistant administrator of the U.N. Development Program and a Middle East expert who speaks Arabic.

The council's approval is virtually certain, the diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of a public announcement,

Last week, the council approved Ban's plans for the U.N. and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to oversee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons stockpile.

Prior to becoming UNDP's assistant secretary-general in May 2010, Kaag served as UNICEF's regional director for the Middle East and North Africa.
