SANAA, Yemen (AP) — A Yemeni security official says suspected al-Qaida militants have assassinated a military officer in a drive-by shooting in the country's capital, Sanaa.
The official says the attackers were riding on a motorcycle when they opened fire on Col. Abdel-Wahab Azzan around noon on Monday.
The official gave no further details. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Yemen is fighting a war against al-Qaida's local branch, considered by Washington as one of the world's most dangerous offshoots of the terror network.
The local branch has carried out several large suicide attacks and assassinations in Yemen in the past years. It is also suspected in Friday's coordinated attacks in the southern province of Shabwa, when 38 Yemeni troops were killed.
