COTEAU-DU-LAC, Quebec (AP) — Police in Quebec say two people are dead after a massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse.

The explosion rocked an area west of Montreal, leaving a huge cloud of smoke that was visible for miles. Provincial police say two bodies were found in the wreckage.

Witnesses say nearly two hours after the blast, fireworks could still be heard exploding at the scene of the fire, which continued to burn out of control for hours after the explosion.

One man who works about a mile from the site says it appears that a small building caught fire first, and that the flames then spread to a larger storage unit. A woman who runs a convenience store near the plant says she thought the store was "falling to the ground." She says, "It shook like you can't imagine."

Police ordered the surrounding community evacuated. A nearby highway was closed.
