BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian activists say rebels are fighting intense battles with troops loyal to President Bashar Assad at three military air bases in the country's north.

Rebels have been trying to capture the air fields for months in an effort to curb the regime's use of air power.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says Syrian government forces carried out an airstrike on a nearby village as rebels broke into a sprawling air base in northwestern Idlib province.

The other battles are taking place in Aleppo province.

Rebels control much of Idlib and Aleppo provinces, which border Turkey. But government troops still hold areas including the provincial capital of Idlib province and parts of the city of Aleppo, Syria's largest urban center.
