KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan official says insurgents have killed four policemen in an attack in the west of the country.

Herat province government spokesman Noor Khan says Taliban militants ambushed the policemen on Tuesday night while they were on patrol in Ghoryan district.

Also, in Kunduz province in the north, police say two police officers were killed when their truck hit a roadside bomb early Wednesday. Kunduz province police chief Gen. Samihullah Qatrah says another two were wounded.

Militant attacks are expected to rise with the summer fighting season, and data from the NATO military coalition in Afghanistan shows that insurgent attacks were also up sharply in May compared those from the same time of year in 2011. Statistics for June are not yet available.
