SPOKANE, Wash. -- An unknown person reportedly threw fireworks from a moving vehicle and ignited a brushfire on Courtland Avenue around 2:00 Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.

Officials said the fire started south of Courtland and burned part of the back of a garage. A second fire further north traveled up a hill toward Glass Street. The fires burned about a quarter acre.

Fire crews said the fires have been put out and are just smoldering.

"I was just kind of shocked because I didn't know anything. I didn't hear yelling at my house, hear anything going on," said Christopher Helm, a neighbor.

Neighbors said they were worried about leaving their homes for 4th of July celebrations because they didn't know if the fire was going to be out. Authorities said the fire burned bushes above six feet in the area before it was contained.

There is no word on a suspect or a vehicle description, according to authorities.
