SPOKANE, Wash. — A former Shadle Park High School teacher appeared in court on Wednesday accused of sexual misconduct with a minor. Court documents showed that a student admitted to having sex with Ryan Murphy.

Murphy worked as an English teacher and a track coach at the time of the alleged misconduct. Spokane Public School District leaders said that Murphy worked for the district for more than one decade. District leaders allowed Murphy to resign in August of 2012 when the misconduct allegations arose.

Court documents stated that Murphy began an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old freshman when he was 40-years-old. The pair allegedly had sex at Murphy’s home and in parking lots according to investigators.

The alleged victim told investigators that Murphy took her to the MAC and met her along Cliff Drive. She said that their meetings eventually lead to sex. Court documents details that the two met on Thursday because Murphy’s wife was not home. They met regularly at the house and had sex according to the alleged victim.

The teenager added that they also had sex in Murphy’s car at Woodridge Elementary School. She also told detectives that Murphy gave her letters and gifts.

Spokane Public School District leaders said they conducted their own extensive investigation.
The legal age of consent in Washington is 16. However, Murphy faces charges because he was an authoritative figure to the alleged victim.
