Thanks to technology, we’re now more connected than in any other time in history.
The flip side: We’ve never been more distracted.
It’s a concern to Jon and Myla Kabat-Zinn, nationally-known parenting experts who say being plugged-in is having an effect on our lives.
Since we’re always running to some better moment, in the process, we’re missing our lives, they say. That can happen in a matter of days, weeks, months, years, or even decades.
“I don’t think any of us want to really wake up at the end, as Thoreau said, when it comes to die, discover I had not lived. And it can happen,” said Jon.
The Kabat-Zinns say technology, including social media, smart phones and email, are having a profound effect on the family.
“That’s having a profound effect on the family,” said Jon. “If you’re out and about and you see mothers with little babies, and the babies are basically being ignored because the parents are constantly on their cell phone, or checking this, or doing that. I’m really concerned that we’re going to have this generation of children that have been so ignored and neglected and haven't had the most basic fundamental reactions that are developmentally needed, soul needed and spiritually needed to thrive and grow as human beings.”
The Kabat-Zinns say to stop and pause before reaching for your cell phone.
Ask yourself why you’re texting or talking instead of paying attention to your child.
Make a point to turn off your phone at certain times so that you’re loved ones can have your full, undivided attention.
It’s all about staying in the present moment, because it’s gone, before you know it.
