SPOKANE, Wash.-- Police were forced into an overnight standoff early Monday after they said a suspect would not cooperate with authorities.
Investigators said it started around midnight as a domestic violence situation at a home near Fairview and Havana. Details surrounding the argument were unclear, but authorities said Steven R. Zimmerman, 51, had a gun while his wife and son were in the house. They said he fired off at least one round into the basement where the son was located.
The wife and son then managed to escape from the home safel, while the Zimmerman stayed inside.
The SWAT team was called and attempted to contact the suspect for several hours with no luck. Eventually, crews fired three rounds of gas into the home, hoping to drive Zimmerman outside.
Around 7:30 a.m., officers found Zimmerman in his truck inside his unattached garage. Zimmerman claimed he did not know police where there.
He faces charges of assault and reckless endangerment for firing shots inside his home. They said alcohol likely played a role in the situation. However, no injuries were reported.
