The machine that is tunneling under downtown Seattle has been stopped in its tracks because of some kind of obstruction.
KaDeena Yerkan with the Washington State Department of Transportation said she believed “Bertha” encountered the obstruction on Friday.
Project officials are trying to determine how to proceed, but it’s not clear yet how long Bertha will be stopped.
A posting on Bertha’s official Twitter account last week indicated the machine had passed 1,000 feet of digging and was about 60 feet below the surface.
Bertha began tunneling at the end of July, but was stopped for several days due to a labor dispute.
The machine is scheduled to finish digging by the end of the next year.
We will post more information on this story as we get it.
