NEW ORLEANS -- Saints officials unveiled a statue commemorating Steve Gleason and one of the most important plays in Saints history on Friday.

The statue, placed in front of the Superdome, is of the Spokane native's famous blocked punt in the 2006 Monday Night Football matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

The play was a coming out party for the 2006-2007 team that shocked the NFL world with a 10-6 record and NFC Championship Game berth, just one year after Hurricane Katrina knocked the city to its knees.

Gleason, who is suffering from ALS, said he and his wife hope the statue helps to spread ALS awareness.

Gleason is a former star linebacker from Gonzaga Prep and Washington State.
