SPOKANE -- Kate’s Barbershop on East Trent in Spokane Valley is a legitimate business.
Next door, investigators say the services at Montana’s Spa are less than legal. The massage parlor and seven others like it in Spokane County were raided Tuesday as a result of a prostitution ring investigation.
"I see guys go over there all the time, but you know you never know exactly what's going on," said Katelin Yuhas who works at the barbershop.
The investigation started more than one year ago at Northern Quest Casino in Airway Heights. The prostitutes busted there told detectives about a larger scene. Local spas were advertising prostitution services on several Internet pages.
In addition to the eight spas, search warrants were executed at six homes across Spokane County. Those homes belong to spa owners.
Investigators say the spas were making anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000 a month on prostitution. Some locations are also being investigated for money laundering.
At this point investigators say they are not arresting johns or prostitutes.
Five of the spa owners were taken into custody Tuesday afternoon.
