A Mountlake Terrace man was killed Friday morning after being struck by a freight train in Edmonds.

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman said it happened just before 7:30 a.m. about a half-mile from the Edmonds ferry terminal. The 35-year-old man was walking toward the track. The crew sounded the whistle and hit the emergency brakes, but could not stop in time.

The train blocked the entrance to the Edmonds ferry terminal. The Edmonds-Kingston ferry run temporarily was suspended and passengers were advised to use the Seattle-Bainbridge Island ferry instead.

It also delayed the departure of Sounder commuter trains out of Everett.
