OCEAN SHORES, Wash. - Detectives are questioning a 21-year-old mother and her boyfriend after a dead newborn baby was dumped in a wooded area in Ocean Shores.
According to police, a woman walking her dog spotted a rag hanging from brush and became suspicious. She looked closer and spotted the infant with obvious signs of injuries.
“It was awfully small so I knew it had to be a small child,” said Bill Day, who lives nearby.
Neighbors are disgusted at the discovery near their home.
“I literally could not go to bed last night,” said Karleen Day.
“I’m a mother of four, with ten grandkids and one great granddaughter, babies are my life,” she said.
The couple noticed someone suspicious lurking around Friday night.
“He had a backpack, a big backpack and he was kind of walking down the street looking around,” said Bill Day.
While it’s not known who that person was, police say tips from media coverage led them to the nearby Oasis Motel, where it’s believed the baby was born. Detectives found the 21-year-old mother and her boyfriend there.
The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Department, Aberdeen Police Department and Hoquiam Police Department have teamed up for the investigation.
“Detectives are interviewing (the mother) and talking to her about the circumstances of what happened,” said Jeff Myers, Hoquiam Police Chief.
Regardless of the details, the Days believe there was a better choice.
“That’s what makes me sad; put it on somebody’s doorstep. Hospitals have actual spots where you can take a baby,” said Karleen Day.
Police say whether or not the 21-year-old mother and her boyfriend will face charges depends on the circumstances of the baby’s death and the findings of the coroner’s autopsy. It’s expected to be completed in the next few days.
