SPOKANE VALLEY -- The Spokane Regional Health District is calling in reinforcements from Washington State University's nursing program for their flu clinics.

More than 1,000 people lined up Saturday afternoon at the Spokane Valley YMCA for their chance to get vaccinated.

Once through the gym doors, the first thing noticed was the sea of crimson WSU nursing students.  Because clinics have been going strong for weeks, many local nurses working extra hours needed some back up.

"I think our staff has been working hard putting forth a very heroic effort and I'm certainly fortunate to be a part of this and we're doing what we can to help protect our community," said Dr. Joel McCullough from the Spokane Regional Health District.

Normally, the WSU nursing students wouldn't get this much hands on experience with vaccination clinics.  When the offer came up, they knew they had to be a part of it.

The students do get a lot of hands on experience in other areas.  But they say this one really helped get them prepare for building a stronger future.
