PORTLAND – The U.S. Navy has canceled its appearance at Portland’s Rose Festival Fleet Week.
Officials blamed federal sequestration for the budget cuts.
Earlier, The Navy announced the Blue Angels would cancel their performance at July’s air show Hillsboro.
"We appreciate the community's understanding during these uncertain budgetary times," Navy Region Northwes Commander Rear Adm. Mark Rich said. "We will continue to find ways to engage locally, in keeping with Department of Defense guidance. We are thankful for what Seattle, Portland, and our community partners do to support our service men and women every day and look forward to continuing to work with those partners now, and in the future."
Fleet Week annually showcases a handful of naval and U.S. Coast Guard vessels down the Willamette. The ships dock at Portland's sea wall and are a magnet for Rose Festival visitors.
Sailors also enjoy shore leave in Portland's Waterfront Park carnival and throughout the city.
The Navy said it intended to continue Fleet Weeks in the future “as the budget situation permits.”
