LYNNWOOD, Wash. - Red light and school zone cameras may be reducing accidents in Lynnwood, but the high number of tickets issued is causing some strain on city operations.
The city says phone calls and mail from citizens complaining or challenging the tickets are inundating staff.
Police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions says most of the complaints come from drivers ticketed by the city's two school zone cameras.
"We spend a huge amount of time taking calls," said Lynnwood Court Administrator Jill O'Cain.
In a report to City Council, officials said the court will need to schedule additional calendars, yet they don't have a courtroom to hear them.
"We are scheduling hearings all the way into September," said O'Cain.
The city has also been spending a lot of time responding to dozens of public disclosure requests about various aspects of the Photo Speed Program.
City Council members will receive a routine update from Lynnwood Police about the program Monday night.
A public hearing is set at the Council's next regularly scheduled meeting on June 28. That is also when council members may make any changes that could alleviate some of the burden put on city staff.
