SEATTLE -- The man who tried to set fire to a popular Seattle gay nightclub on New Year's Eve has pleaded guilty to one charge of arson.

In plea deal in federal court Friday, Masab Masmari pleaded guilty for his role in the arson at Neighbours on Capitol Hill. As part of the agreement, Masmari would get five years in federal prison and five years probation. Another judge handling his sentencing in July could possibly sentence him up to 20 years behind bars.

Federal prosecutors said Masmari confessed to the arson at Neighbours, but hasn't yet said why he chose to target the nightclub. Prosecutors say details on the reason behind Masmari's crime will be revealed during the sentencing hearing on July 31.

Just after midnight on January 1, a fire was set in the stairways at Neighbours. Around 750 people and staff were inside the club at the time, but no injuries were reported.
