TACOMA, Wash. – A rare Sumatran Tiger Tacoma's Point Defiance Zoo is battling cancer, while his mate is now pregnant.
Bali hadn't been himself lately, but zoo curators were not ready for the diagnosis from a specialist. Bali has a form of lymphoma that they are treating, but it is usually fatal. The depressed staff spread the news to the world zoo community that the tiger could be lost.
But then the staff discovered something wonderful. The female Sumatra Tiger, Jaya was also not herself. An ultrasound soon revealed Bali had successfully impregnated her.
Three healthy cubs are in Jaya's womb and, if they make it to birth, could mean a big boost to the world Sumatran Tiger population.
