A new NFL bag policy went into effect at CenturyLink field for the first 2013 home preseason game against the Broncos. On their website, the Seahawks say their new security measure is designed to enhance public safety and expedite entry into the stadium.
Fans are allowed the following items:
- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12."
- One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (Ziploc bag or similar).
- Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap, may be carried into the stadium along with one of the clear bag options.
- An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at a gate designated for this purpose.
The Seahawks will distribute approved bags at Saturday's preseason game against the Broncos and at the September 15 game against the 49ers. If fans arrive unprepared for the new policy, there will be three temporary Bag Check Stations.
Some fans expressed concern for the new bag policy, specifically that the bags weren't available in advance.
"I did my due diligence, tried to plan in advance, obtain one of these bags, and to my surprise, there were just simply no bags available for the public," said fan Paul Veilleux.
The NFL updated its bag policy after the Boston Marathon Bombings. Most fans KING 5 spoke with are supportive of the push for better security and safety.
"I think it's a great idea, you don't need to bring that much stuff to a game anyhow," said Theresa Guido.
"Of course, it'd be great if I could bring my bag. But if they give you a bag, and they tell you can have it back at the end of the night, why not?" said Diana Vykhovanten.
Seahawks staff said it checked around 1,300 bags for Saturday night's game. The longest wait for fans to get their items back was around fifteen minutes.
