BREMERTON - A day after a deadly apartment fire residents were allowed back inside to gather their belongings. Resident Brandie Williams said nearly everything was damaged inside her home at the Madrona Estates apartments.

“The door was kicked in and it looked empty,” said Williams.

Tuesday morning a fire ripped through the apartment complex at the 4900 block of Auto Center Way. A woman inside did not make it out alive.

The smoke and flames damaged a section of the apartment complex forcing some residents to find another place to stay on Christmas Eve. Some of the units were destroyed.

“A lot of these people didn’t have anywhere to go. We were fortunate,” said Justin Blackwood, resident.

Blackwood said his apartment did not have any damage, but he was still without power Wednesday afternoon.

The Red Cross is helping residents forced from their apartments.

“It is a Merry Christmas to be here, but it is not what I pictured,” said Williams.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but fire officials have ruled out arson and believe it was likely an accident.
