NORTH BEND, Wash -- The King County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help after a newborn was found dead in a wooded area near North Bend Wednesday.
Deputies on Thursday issued a photo of the bath towel found with the baby. They're hoping someone might recognize the towel and may have more information about the identity of the baby or the baby's mother.
The towel is Target brand, Home Collection. It is faded black with colored squares on one side, and rectangles on the other.
Deputies received a call around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday from a witness who said they found a dead baby in a wooded area in 38000 block of SE North Bend Way, said spokesperson Cindi West.
Responding deputies went to the scene and found the baby's body in the woods at the 38800 block of SE North Bend Way near Kimble Creek Bridge. There is a 40 foot shoulder where cars can pull off the road. Police say the baby was found about 10 feet from the pavement.
Detectives said the baby appeared to have been full term and still had the umbilical cord still attached. As of Thursday afternoon, the King County Medical Examiners Office still had not released the cause of death for the infant. It is unclear if the baby was stillborn or died after it was born.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the King County Sheriff's Office at 206-296-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
