REDMOND -- Prom season is underway and this year, it’s all about vintage looks for high school girls. At Samila Boutique in Remond, girls are choosing lace and chiffon. Pastel colors, especially mint green, are popular colors this year. Depending on the embellishments, a dress can cost anywhere from $200 to $550 on average.
Yasmin Sherdel, owner of Samila Boutique, recommends girls try on dresses at a brick and mortar store, instead of ordering online because some of the dresses could be from fraudulent sites or may not be as advertised.
"There's a lot of sites right now that are selling dresses that are not authentic," said Sherdel.
Sherdel adds that trying on a dress in person also makes a big difference.
“Sometimes you have a concept in your mind of what you think you like, until you get in the store and really try it on, have the opportunity to see what the different silhouettes do for your figure, you don't know," she said.
At Samila Boutique, they don’t order dresses in bulk, so you won’t find one dress stocked in different sizes and colors. That means, chances are you won’t be wearing the same dress as someone else.
Some high schools now have Facebook pages dedicated to prom dresses, where girls post the dress that they’ll be wearing to the prom, so no one else will show up wearing the same thing.
After the prom, Sherdel recommends girls have the dress altered to a shorter length so it can be worn to a cocktail party or sell it to a consignment shop and someone else can wear the beautiful dress.
