You will likely notice more state troopers out on Washington roads this holiday weekend. Between Wednesday and Monday, the State Patrol is conducting the "I-5 Challenge," encouraging drivers to get through the Thanksgiving Holiday extended weekend with zero fatalities on Interstate 5.
Troopers are joining forces with law enforcement from the Mexican border to Canada, to saturate I-5 with DUI patrols.
Last over the Thanksgiving weekend, 369 drivers were arrested for DUI. The holiday weekend is considered the busiest travel time of the year.
On average, 49 people died in Washington state traffic accidents between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day each of the last five years, according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
