LYNNWOOD, Wash. - The Lynnwood city council on Monday approved an eight-inch limit limit on lawn heights in an attempt to keep neighborhoods tidy and protect property values.

"This isn't about someone who hasn't cut their grass for a few weeks," saId Lynnwood's community development director, Paul Krauss. "This is about long-term negligence."

How long is too long?  Some people favored a 12-inch limit, while others said 6 inches is long enough.

"The bigger issue is public safety," said Krauss. "Long grass can be a breeding ground for vermin, which then invade neighboring homes. I can also be a fire hazard."

City officials say no one will be patrolling the streets with tape measurers.  The goal, they say, is simply to make problem property owners accountable for keeping their homes tidy.
