SEATTLE - A 6 year-old Seattle boy is home from the hospital today, but may require reconstructive surgery, after a bicyclist struck him at a busy downtown intersection.

Noni Echo-Hawk-Lopez is a reserved boy to begin with, his parents said, but now he's not even allowed to talk because of a fractured and swollen jaw.

Doctors at Harborview Medical Center "had to completely wire his jaw shut," said his mother, Abigail Echo-Hawk. "You tell your kids to look both ways before crossing the street, and be aware [of cars], but I've never mentioned watch out for a bicycle."

Noni was walking with his older brother and father Chris Lopez Friday night outside Pike Place Market.  911 logs indicated paramedics responding to the incident at 6:41 p.m.  The three were crossing the north side of the intersection of Pike Street and First Avenue at the time, said Lopez.

"The bike came out of nowhere, just  flying down the street," said Lopez, "and then before I could reach for Noni, he was gone. He just did a 360[-degree flip] in the air."

"My son... his mouth... I mean, it was horrible. Blood started flying everywhere."

Lopez said what happened next was even more shocking -- the man allegedly picked up his bike and started riding away.

"I could just see everybody stop and freeze," Lopez said. "Nobody could believe that he got up to run."

But then, about 15 bystanders chased the cyclist to the southeast corner of the instersection, "ganged up on him and tackled him and held him until police arrived," he said. "I thought it was awesome."

"For them to come together as a  community and to ensure that he was going to be taken to jail and he was going to have to answer for he had done, made me think that's why I live here," said Echo-Hawk, who also praised the police and paramedic response.

Noni is expected to make a full recovery, though it may require additional surgery, said his parents.

And while Echo-Hawk said the cyclist bears the brunt of the blame, she hopes they can convince the city to make the crosswalks clearer at that intersection.

"He should have stopped. He should have watched. That responsibility does fall on him," she said. "But the city also needs to take a look at why don't we have lines on that crosswalk, what could we have done to protect this little boy who at no point should ever have to be put through something like this."

Thank God that boy will be okay, and they got the perp. Time for some perspective though, "A Ford Explorer was traveling east on 108th Street in the city of Marysville. They got up towards Highway 9 where there was a stop sign, they blew through the stop sign," said Leary. "There was a 2007 Hyundai with four occupants in it. The Explorer hit that Hyundai, that vehicle rolled over onto the shoulder of the roads and very tragically those folks, all four of them, died at the scene." There's only 3 comments on that story yet pages of venom on this one. 4 people are dead. Extra credit for the 1st person to spot the obvious difference in outcomes when cars run stop signs. Tell me this, does this boy being struck by a bicycle justify the next 10 people killed by cars this week, or the last 10?

as a family member, little Noni was not jaywalking or crossing illegally. He was walking with his dad crossing at the light which was red for the cyclist. The cyclist blew through the light and was attempting to weave in and out of the large group of pedistrians crossing the street. The only fault here is on the cyclist for not following traffic laws and attempting to leave as a little boy lay bleeding in the street.

To continue: I agree with those who say that the cyclist should be charged just as a car driver would be. I think it's important to know whether the boy and his parents were crossing the intersection legally, but I don't think anyone (car or cyclist) should be driving fast through that particular intersection. It is notoriously dangerous and full of pedestrians. The cyclist was driving recklessly, and then tried to leave the scene of the accident. There is no justification for any of those behaviors, period.

I am a car driver and not a bicyclist. This incident is about a jerk on a bike, not about all cyclists being jerks. It's also about a bunch of citizens who stepped up to the plate and did their duty. The cyclist's behavior was intolerable. Throw the book at him. By the way, a man who works for me (also a motorist and not a cyclist) witnessed a hit-and-run last Thursday (Nov. 12th) in Fremont by a motorist against a cyclist. He obtained and gave to police a full description of the car including the license number. We are looking for the cyclist who was deliberately struck by the car, and any witnesses, so the car driver can be prosecuted. People with information should contact me at jmgrinder@gmail.com. Thanks much. We all have to share the roads and follow the rules.

This is exactly why cyclists needs to be registered like motorists. They also must have proof if insurance. They want equal rights to the roads and bike lanes, pay for it. They should also be required to pass highway saftey classes. Licata, there's your city revenue gap.

It doesn't say anywhere, but it sounds like they were crossing the intersection against the light, which pedestrians do not have a right to do: WAC 504-14-940 (1) When traffic control signals are in place at intersections, pedestrians shall be subject to them. Traffic does have to yield to pedestrians at intersections when there are not traffic control signals, such as residential areas: (2) When traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation at pedestrian crossings, a vehicle must yield the right of way, by slowing down or stopping, when the pedestrian in the crossing is upon the same half of the roadway as the vehicle, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger. Of course the cyclists is completely at fault with the attempted hit and run.

hrdheded1: They were crossing at an intersection. It doesn't matter if there was a marked crossing or not. In Washington state the pedestrian has the right of way while crossing an intersection. This guy was obivously riding WAY to fast to make this chil fly up into the air. I know someone that was actually pulled over and received a ticket in Mount Vernon for riding his bike too fast down a steep hill. I actually see very few responsible bike riders. They want to ride on the street they should have mirrors and lights on their bikes just like a motorcycle and use the proper gestures when they are turning or stopping. I almost hit a bike rider a couple of months ago that veered out in front of me without looking. If I had been the least bit distracted I would have hit them. I am tired of people blaming the victims of these irresposible riders.

I feel sorry for this boy but.... I don't see in the story where the bicyclist was ticketed for failing to yield which makes me wonder were they jaywalking thus breaking the law thus putting themselves into harms way. And for all the righteous drivers out there, let's do the math, idiotic driver runs over pedestrian while drunk, cell phoning, etc.... vs how many bicyclists hit pedestrians. I got 1 million on more idotic drivers hitting innocent pedestrians while being idiots in their cars.

I have had a few near misses thanks to some bicyclists. Maybe they should have a "drivers ED" course too, but alas, I fear many of them wouldn't remember what they were taught. I hope this poor little guy recovers without too much trauma to his psyche. As previous writters have said, the bicyclist is lucky he wasn't beaten up. Glad he was caught, now he needs to be punished and charged with hit and run, just like a car driver would be.

hrdheded1 - I don't see how it is the little boy's fault as you state above... he was walking with his family when the cyclist came through so fast... poor kid... I wish him a full and speedy recovery and the cyclist needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and particular for trying to flee the accident scene

Don't blame the city! There are all kinds of signs, crosswalks, lights, cameras, etc. It is becoming very dangerous to drive and unlicensed bicyclists running through red lights, riding between cars at intersections, and ignoring other traffic rules makes it worse. It's time to license the bicyclists AND the bicycles (ie, plates and tabs similar to cars). It's difficult to concentrate on safety when there is too much to direct your attention at. Over-extensive sign-age and bizarre bicycle lanes out of the flow of traffic, intersections, and parking, are distracting and not useful; Crosswalks with multiple signs and flashing lights grab your attention to everything EXCEPT people in the crosswalk. Bicyclist that don't obey road rules and dart in and out of traffic create danger to everyone. Jay-walkers put themselves in danger by putting themselves in the path of cars that aren't anticipating them. While driving around town you are confronted with all these things simultaneously!

Rickster960-- Perfect thought, I and everyone else who drives a car on the roadway has to provide liability insurance, why don't bikes, what if they cause a wreck and (1) or (2) car get damaged and they are at fault, Who will pay?

This is exactly the reason I believe cyclists should have to license their vehicles to SHARE the road with cars and pedestrians. A license plate is how I would be tracked down in a hit and run, so why not them? They need to obey the same rules of the road as a motorized vehicle and be held to those rules. Police need to start issuing citations to those who don't. This brings up insurance. Who's paying this kids medical bills??? I hope this young boy has a speedy recovery and the cyclist is made to pay!

I'm not a bicyclist but after reading previous comments, I concur with 'batti4'. Its both parties at fault: the cyclist and the little boy. Well just have to wait and see what the outcome is.

Cars, cyclist and pedestrians alike need to be aware and learn the rules of the road. Regardless of whether it is a painted crosswalk or not, motor vehicle need to take caution while going through an intersection. Just because your light is green, does NOT mean you do not have to yield to pedestrians. BUT......Pedestrians as well....maybe not in the particular case......need to not have the attitude that they own the road and just step out into the street. Us a society have become so distracted...I.E. Ipods turned up too loud, talking on the cell phone..etc. that we are not aware of our surroundings. This case is a definite neglect on the cyclist part, but blaming the city for not having the sidewalk painted is too much. It is ALWAYS the cutiy's fault hwen something bad happens. KNOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD. The crosswalk DOES NOT have to be painted to be a crosswalk. Just another way to rack up the government bill...which in turn raises our taxes.

The majority of bicyclists want to be treated the same as a vehicle. They want the same rights as drivers of cars. However, it seems with this wanting of rights, they do not want to accept the obligations and requirements that vehicles must follow. They want to be treated as equal until there is an inconvenience, (such as stopping at a traffic light, impeding traffic etc...) Which one is it..... vehicle or pedestrian? My thoughts go out to this family. I hope your son has a speedy recovery.

I totally agree with Collageguy, seems the majority of cyclist I have observed could care less about road rules such as stopping at intersections using do care and caution for other pedestrians or cars , I think cyclist should be watched a little closer by our cities finest and held accountable for there indiscretions same as motorist.

To all you cyclists who whine that drivers are horrible to you on the road, take this story to heart that YOU too are just as bad in your own way. I have been a cyclist myself and the behavior on BOTH sides at times has been ridiculous! I have seen other cyclists blow through intersections, fail to yield for cars and other garbage that makes it pretty obvious why both sides hate each other.
