EVERETT, Wash. – One person was killed and two people were injured in an apartment fire Friday morning.

The Everett Police Department says the fire at the Candlewood Apartments started around 2:45 a.m. Officers saw flames and smoke coming from a bottom floor corner unit in the “A” building when they arrived and called the Everett Fire Department.

“My first priority was getting my 7-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son out safely," said Gloria Powell.

Neighbors say an older man and his son lived in the unit. Melvin Huss, who lives on the third floor, said he spotted a man trying to get into the burning apartment.

"He told me his dad was inside, so we kicked at the door over and over, but it wouldn't open. Then I told him, we had to get out of here, it's too dangerous,” said Huss, adding that explosions that were heard during the fire may have come from oxygen tanks the older man used.

Firefighters found a body in that unit, but as of late Friday morning, that person had not been identified.

Two people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Dozens of people were displaced. The Red Cross is helping them.

The cause remained under investigation.
