A 6-year-old boy taken from his grandmother's Auburn home was found safe and his mother arrested Monday following a high-speed chase that ended in the Stevens Pass area.
An Amber alert was issued Monday morning for Mason Joseph Bennatts-Miller, who is described as autistic.
Police say Sandra Bennatts was hiding in her mother's home when her mother came home with the boy.
Police say Bennatts jumped her mother and tied her up with rope and duct tape. Then she ransacked the home, stole her mother's car and took off with her son.
The grandmother, Sharon Bennatts, laid there for about eight hours trying to work herself free and when she finally did she was able to run to a neighbor and call for help.
King County sheriff's Sgt. DB Gates said for several hours police didn't know where Bennatts and the car were, “But detectives were able to ping a cell phone that was in the vehicle, that she probably didn’t know was in the vehicle."
Bennatts' vehicle was spotted traveling eastbound on Highway 2 over Stevens Pass just before noon.
When her car sped off at nearly 100 mph, police backed off.
"Knowing there’s a kid in the car, that changes things a bit,” said Gates.
Finally Bennatt's car broke down, or she ran out of gas, near Stevens Pass and was picked up by sheriff's deputies.
She was brought to Woodinville for questioning and her son, who was physically unharmed, was taken back to Auburn.
Police say Bennatts’ mother was tied up for so long there were concerns that she might lose her hands, but she was released from the hospital and is recovering with friends and family.
Bennatts' mother's home is secluded, down a private road. Neighbors didn’t want to talk to reporters about what went on.
The boy's father spoke only briefly, saying he wanted his son back home safe.
It’s still not known what touched Monday’s incident.
"This wasn’t just a custody dispute. This was a felony committed to take this child,” said Sgt. Gates.
Sandra Bennatts is now facing several possible felony charges, including kidnapping, robbery, burglary and eluding police.
Police say she has some drug issues.
