SPOKANE, Wash. -- Fire crews are battling flames at the intersection of Mayfair and Central.

The fire sparked at the Mayfair professional building. Authorities received a call about smoke coming from the southeast corner of the building around 4:15 p.m.

When fire crews arrived they knocked out windows. Crews on the 1st floor and in the basement said they saw no visible fire and conditions got better then quickly deteriorated. All fire crews were evacuated.

The fire was in the walls on the west side of the building between the first and second floor as well as the attic. Fire crews couldn't get to the roof and had to let the fire burn a hole in the roof.

Right now, they are trying to defend a part of the building where a dentist's office is that has potentially hazardous materials inside.

No word yet on how the fire started. No one was inside at the time of the fire.
