LAKE STEVENS, Wash. -- A disabled student pulled unconscious from a swimming pool at Lake Stevens High School at the end of May has died.
An attorney representing the family says Fedrick Nifasha died on Sunday at an Everett hospital after being removed from life support.
The family, which immigrated to the United States from Tanzania, says Nifasha was enrolled in a Lake Stevens School District special education program and was at the pool as part of a field trip.
Attorney Sim Osborn says Fedrick did not know how to swim. He never regained consciousness after being pulled from the water.
School district spokeswoman Jayme Taylor said Nifasha was pulled from the bottom of the pool at the beginning of the swim session after a teacher noticed he was missing.
"The aquatics manager, who is a certified lifeguard, pulled Fedrick from the water and began life-saving efforts until first responders arrived and took over," said Taylor.
Taylor said she could not discuss an more specifics due to the ongoing investigation.
