Westfield Southcenter Mall in Tukwila was briefly locked down after a police officer shot a suspect in the mall parking garage midday Tuesday.

The incident started just after noon. Police were conducting a random search in Southcenter's cafe parking garage when they came upon a vehicle that had been reported stolen. One passenger appeared to be inside.

As they approached the vehicle, the driver showed up. When he spotted the officers, the driver jumped into another vehicle with another passenger and they took off. A police chase followed.

In the chase, the officer felt forced to fire his gun and the suspect was shot, ending the chase. The details of why he was compelled to shoot was unknown.

The suspect's condition was unknown; the officer was not injured.

Tukwila Fire Department officials said medics were en route to a "target" on Strander Boulevard, across the street from the mall.

Witnesses said the mall was placed into lockdown at this time. The entrance to the mall at Nordstrom appeared to taped off, and a couple of police cars were at the scene. By 12:45 p.m., the mall was reopened.
