PORTLAND -- An Alaska Airlines flight bound for Seattle was diverted to Portland late Thursday night after its pilot lost consciousness.

Alaska Airlines says flight 473 was on its way from Los Angeles to Seattle was diverted when the captain of the flight lost consciousness.

The plane was in autopilot when the captain lost consciousness and so the first officer, according to proper procedure, took over flying the plane and diverted it to the nearest airport, which was Portland International Airport (PDX).

The plane landed safely at PDX around 9:00 p.m. Paramedics intercepted the plane on the runway and took the pilot to the hospital.

The captain has been flying for Alaska Airlines for 28 years. His condition is unknown at this time.

As for the passengers, they have been rebooked for a later departure to Seattle.
