MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. -- Eastern State Hospital has been given a preliminary denial of accreditation by an independent agency.

The Joint Commission conducted its tri-annual review last week.

It found patients can too easily access dangerous items, which could be used for strangulation. The hospital was given 72 hours to remove those items, and has reportedly complied.

The hospital is operating as usual, and the staff is admitting patients.

Eastern State is currently awaiting a final review. There is no timeline for a definitive answer.\

The Joint Commission's analysis comes about a month after a patient was strangled to death by another patient. Amber Roberts has pleaded not guilty to killing Duane Charley with a cord.
