SPOKANE -- The Department of Defense announced Tuesday the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sgt. Matthew H. Stiltz, 26, of Spokane, was killed Nov. 12, in Zerok, Afghanistan.  Authorities said he was killed by indirect fire when insurgents attacked his unit.

Stiltz was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

Family members said this was Stiltz’s third tour, and he was supposed to return home this summer. He completed two tours in Iraq.

They said Stiltz loved being a soldier, and wanted to make it his career.

Stiltz’s wife, mother and father traveled to Delaware to receive his body. An official with the Department of Defense said Matthew was promoted to Staff Sergeant after his death.

Matthew was a 2005 graduate of Shadle Park High School in Spokane. His family hopes to bury him at the Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake.
