A neighbor who tried to break up a physical fight between a couple outside an Auburn home early Tuesday was stabbed to death.
Auburn Police arrested the man suspected of killing him shortly after. He has not been identified. The victim has only been identified as a 23-year-old male.
The incident began when a boyfriend and girlfriend started arguing inside a house near 6th Street Southeast and K Street Southeast around midnight.
The argument spilled outside, into the front yard of the home. The 23-year-old victim, who was at a house across the street, heard the disturbance and went over to intervene.
The suspect then emerged from inside the home where the fight originated and stabbed the victim, according to police. Officers said the victim collapsed in the street where he died from his injuries.
"He was just trying to help the girl, he wasn't a bad guy," cried neighbor Valerie Robinson.
The suspect left the scene in a car, but Auburn Police stopped the vehicle and arrested him. They also recovered the knife believed to have been used.
Detectives said the boyfriend and girlfriend involved in the initial fight are not suspected in the fatal stabbing.
Auburn Police continue to investigate.
More details will be posted as they become available.
