LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. – The Washington State Patrol is investigating a fatal collision that happened on Interstate 90 near Liberty Lake early Thursday morning.

Officials said Laura Lafferty, 71, of Rathdrum, Idaho was killed in the crash. Her son, Richard Lafferty, 50, was in the car with her and was seriously injured and taken to Sacred Heart, WSP said.

Traffic was blocked on the westbound lanes at the Harvard Road exit near Liberty Lake until just before 12 p.m. WSP officials said the scene was completely clear around 12:40 p.m.

Trooper Jeff Sevigney of WSP said three vehicles were involved. WSP said a street sweeper going west on I-90 at Liberty Lake changed to the left lane striking the right side of another vehicle, driven by Lafferty. Her vehicle then hit a median, climbed the barrier and struck the up right for the overpass. Officials said the car went airborne and was hit by a third car.

The driver and passenger of the street sweeper and the other car involved in the wreck were not seriously hurt.
