SR 16 lane reductions on hold due to weather

Jenna Hanchard reports.

Inclement weather has put state route 16 construction in Tacoma on hold this weekend.

The state was to continue work expanding Interstate 5 HOV lanes through Tacoma, working on lanes near the SR 16/I-5 interchange. Crews will reduce lanes from two to one on the eastbound SR 16 to I-5 onramp. The work and lane reductions are expected to last through spring 2017.

The work will begin when the weather permits.

WSDOT will also implement nightly single and double lane reductions on both directions of I-5 between Port of Tacoma Road and M Street next week. Single lane closures begin at 8 p.m., and double lane closures begin at 10 p.m.

Drivers should expect heavy traffic and use alternate routes once the SR 16 lane reductions begin. Crews used a similar configuration for construction in 2015, and WSDOT said it created routine backups.
