Monitors are one of those gaming items that, once you've found a good one, you tend not change it for awhile.  I had my old 19" tube monitor for a good seven years before I finally moved into the LED HD era.  Since about 2009 I have been using a 22" monitor by Samsung.  It has been great. But today I'm going to talk about a different monitor, one that I think I will need to invest in; the HP Pavilion 23xi IPS.

Out of the box, I was immediately impressed with the look of the HP Pavilion 23xi IPS.  A 23" monitor, as its name implies, it has an edgeless design that gives it a crisp, modern look.  There isn't a lot of "fluff" here.  It can best be described as minimal and space saving.  The case materials are plastic and feel strong.  The silver base is compact, providing desk space under your monitor.  Assembly was a simple snap together.  However, I have two complaints about the case and mount.  1) There is no option to raise or lower the monitor; there is only one fixed height.  It does allow for the ability to tilt the monitor, if you need to.  2)  There is no option to use a wall or swing arm mount.  It is designed to only be mounted on the base provided.

The back has three options for video connection: HDMI, DVI, or VGA.  Most devices can be connected using one of these options such as your computer, laptop, Xbox 360, PS3, a Blu-Ray player, and many more.  These are not hidden "rip up your fingers" connections either.  They are easily accessible, so switching between devices is hassle free.

I decided to use my gaming laptop to put it through its paces.  The picture is a full HD at 1920 X 1080 and is very crisp.  I flipped through some HD backgrounds and the viewing angles were quite impressive.  It was quickly putting my laptop's screen to shame.  Next, I played a few games with lots of fast action and the image quality was just as pretty.  There was no lag, or ghosting, just pure gaming pleasure.  I could not blame the monitor for any flubs when playing.  I also found myself watching more YouTube videos in full screen mode.  It was just that nice.

Sadly for me, it is a review model and so it has to go back.  The good thing is that a quick search online shows the HP Pavilion 23xi IPS is pretty affordable; most listing at $230 or less.  That is a good indication of how much I recommend this monitor; I'm shopping around for one before I even send this one back.

The HP Pavilion xi IPS line does come in smaller and larger models and pricing varies accordingly.  So from a gamer perspective, yes I recommend the HP Pavilion 23xi IPS; it's good for everyday use and great for gaming.
