SEATTLE – You can get a free tall coffee at Starbucks Tuesday, thanks to federal election law.
The Seattle coffee giant originally came up with the great idea to get out the vote by giving away free coffee at select stores to customers who cast a ballot.
But according to the Washington Secretary of State’s Office, a federal statute forbids any freebies, cash payments or any other type of reward for registering, voting or not voting. The point is to keep interest groups from paying people to vote.
Starbucks has since decided to offer the free tall brewed coffee to any customer who walks into a participating store.
"We've been excited by the number of positive responses received about our free coffee offer. To ensure we are in compliance with election law, we are extending our offer to all customers who request a tall brewed coffee. We're pleased to honor our commitment to communities on this important Election Day. We hope there is a record turnout on Tuesday and look forward to celebrating with our customers over a great cup of coffee," said Tara Darrow of Starbucks in a statement.
The Secretary of State's Office is pleased with this decision, and wishes hyper-caffeinated Washington voters a double-tall Happy Election Day.
Several years ago, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream did the same thing after a similar promotion.
This year, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. is giving away star-shaped doughnuts. Ice cream maker Ben and Jerry's is offering a free scoop as part of a celebration of the election.
